I will protest for $99

It’s the time to celebrate! I made about 100 dollars through my Insta-drawing campaign (I sold my drawings on Instagram for $10 each to anyone who asks for it). Final push was made possible with generous support of $30 from Article Magazine (monthly art publication from Seoul) who asked if I can make a piece for their special issue on “Propaganda about propaganda”. I went to Bushwick to friend’s studio to make some pickets.

I didn’t know what to protest about, but I knew I would do it for $99

얼마 전부터 인스타그램에 친구들 보라고 올리던 드로잉을 10불에 팔기 시작했다. 누구든지 원하는 드로잉을 알려주고 10달러를 수표나 Paypal을 통해 보내면 공책에서 그림을 뜯어서 우편으로 보내주었다. 원대한 계획은 그림을 1000개를 팔면 수수료 후 800달러 정도를 모을 수 있고 그 돈으로 좀 더 영구적인 재료로 그림을 만들어 전시한다는 것이다. 그동안 한 번도 작품을 팔아본 적이 없는 나에게 이 사업 계획이 대단한 모험으로 느껴졌다. 3개월이 지난 지금 거의 100달러 정도를 모았다. 이 정도 속도라면 2년 반 정도 후에는 목표치를 달성할 수 있을 것이다. 이 작지만 의미 있는 성과를 자축하기 위해 99달러를 피켓에 쓰고 거리로 나갔다. 부르클린 중앙의 부시윅 지역 공사장에서 일하던 아저씨들이 내 모습이 우스웠는지 농담을 건넸고 그 기회를 이용해 그들과 99달러 시위를 했다. 잠시 후 마지막 피켓에 슬로건을 썼다. “I will protest for”…”$99”
