Being an agent for the Collective Intelligence Agency is no easy thing, and not because of bad wages or dangerous missions, but because its tasks are always impossible missions whose only future seems to end up submerged in endless archives of paper documents, digital files of all types, dust from the road, and no clear idea of what to do with the data collected on the open field. That is, until the alchemy happens. As an agent of this networked CIA one always knows that its data is a readymade for open interpretation, that other agents could end up using it to further their own investigations, which means the data I collect today has no fixed destiny: it won’t become a book or a video or an exhibit “a”, but part of an archive that will potentially be remixed for whatever purpose another agent needs it for. There are no serious political struggles without their own economic force, and no economic force without their own intelligence. This is what this Collective Intelligence stands for, and no, it is not open to all and everyone, but only to anyone who is already a part of the secret agenda of Another World is Possible, as long as they have links to the participant nodes, and can contribute information that can be useful for this labour of love: a networked operation focusing on intelligence gathering, whose aim is to distribute local knowledges to globalized resistance initiatives that started within the context of the 2010 bicentennial anniversary of the wave of independence movements in Latin America independence, and on-going anti-colonial struggles throughout the hemisphere.

집단지능국Collective Intelligence Agency 의 정보원으로 활동하는것은 쉬운일이 아니다. 적은 임금이나 난이한 임무때문이 아니라 우리에게 주워지는 일이 언제나 불가능에 가깝기 때문이다. 방대한 분량의 정보들, 예를 들면  종이 문서, 여러가지 형식의 디지털 정보, 길에서 채집한 먼지 등, 특정한 목적이 제시되지 안은 상태에서 수집이 되기 때문이다. 하지만 그 불가능한 지점에서 연금술같은 사건이 벌어지기 시작한다. 집단정보국의 정보원이 수집한 정보는 다양한 해석이 가능한 레디메이드Readymade 같아서 하나의 목적에 한정되지 않는다. 따라서 그것은 특정한 책이나 영상, 혹은 전시를 위해 사용되는것이 아니라 아카이브된후 다른 정보원이 사용할수도 있고, 리믹스되어서 새로운 목적을 만들기도 한다. 어떤 중요한 정치적인 투쟁도 그 사회의 경제적인 흐름과 분리된것은 없으며, 어떤 경제적인 흐름도 그 고유의 의지가 없는 경우는 없다. 이러한 이유에서 집단지능국이 존재하는 의미가 있지만 그렇다고 해서 우리가 아무에게 열려있는 개방적인 집단이라고 쉽게 판단하면 안된다. 우리는 ‘또다른 세상이 가능하다’ Another World is Possible 의 비밀 아젠다에 동의하는 사람들만이 접근 가능하며 이 데이터베이스를 활용하고 내용을 추가할수 있다. 이 모든것은 보수를 바라보지 않고 자진해서 봉사하는 마음으로 하는 일이다. 우리의 네트워크 작전을 통해 수집한 지역적인 정보를 글로벌 저항 운동을 위해 사용할수 있기 분포하고, 특히 라틴 어메리카의 독립의 2세기를 기리는 2010년에도 계속되는 반-식민지주의적인 투쟁의 일부가 되는 것이다.

Collective Intelligence Agency is both an online accessible database and a decentralized human based network of local agents who participate as correspondents engaged in intelligence gathering activities, opening files on practices and subjects and disputed historic facts and narratives, as well as legacies of anti-colonial resistance, as well as contemporary liberation movements. Because efficient personal tactics can either add puzzle pieces or become succesful survival techniques for the the multitudes: sign-in, join an ongoing investigation. open a file on any topic, submit reports, propose questions, critizice interpretation of evidence in ongoing cases, create new synaptic and historical correspondence beetween open cases. And over all, remember there’s no such thing as a closed case, but continuous upgrades on the interpretation of past events.

집단지능국은 온라인 데이터베이스이자 분산된 에이전트들의 네트워크로서 현지 에이전트와 원거리에 있는 에이전트가 정보 수집 활동에 동참해서 논란의 여지가 있는 역사적 사실과 서사, 반식민지적인 저항, 그리고 현대의 해방 운동에 관한 파일에 접근한다.  에이전트의 활동은 각자의 전술에 따라서 흩어진 퍼즐 조각을 맞추거나 다중의 생존을 위한 기술이 되기도 한다. 서명하기, 파일을 열기, 새로운 리포트를 제출하기, 질문을 제시하기, 지속되고있는 사건에 관련된 단서의 해석을 비판하기, 진행중인 사건들의 신경적인 그리고 역사적인 연결점을 만들기 등의 활동이 있으다. 가장 중요한것은 언제나 완성되고 닫힌 사건이란 없으며 계속해서 과거의 사건들이 새로운 해석 되고 있는 것이다.

Our project started in april  2009 in the abandoned town of Greenland, Colorado (a territory currently belonging to the US, which formerly belonged to the states of Mexico, Spain, France, and different Native American nations) and will conclude in 2010  in Nuuk, the capital of  Greenland, a country that  started its process to achieve its status as a country in june 2009, and which is currently a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

우리의 활동은 2009년 봄에 콜로라도Colorado 주의 한 처의 버려진 마을인 그린랜드Greenland 에서 시작되었다. 그곳은 현재는 미합중국의 영토이지만 그전에는 멕시코, 스페인, 프랑스 그리고 여러 원주민 부족들의 땅이였다. 그리고 2010년에 그린랜드Greenland 의 수도인 누크Nuuk 에서 끝날 예정이다, 그린랜드는 2009년부터 독립 국가로서의 위치를 갖기 위한 과정을 시작했지만 현재까지는 덴마크의 영토이다.

I joined the South Korea Eyebeam Roadshow by invitation of Taeyoon Choi with no clear idea or mission, other than to do reconnaissance, and survey possibilities to establish a south to south connection. I don’t want to go too deep into the question of rescuing the rivers, as the forces involved in shaping the political geographies are wizards of Oz, who have been very succesful in seducing and mesmerizing hordes of persons into trying to follow an imaginary and unsastainable way of life to which they have vowed loyalty, and actually in this part of the world ended up dividing the south from their brothers in the north. Nothing new. But what I will say is that rivers are the base of civilization, and without them, the present urban world wouldn’t exist. It’s true, now in the era of information and networked capitalism the map is being reshaped and the war for natural resources is fiercer than ever. Will people settle for an iPad or artificial horizontality, in the pursuit of the religion of democracy? What modes of organization will prove efficient on the warfare against decentralized powers?

나는 최태윤의 초대를 받고 아이빔 로드쇼 대한민국에 참여했다. 지역을 정찰을 하고 ‘남쪽과 남쪽의 연대’를 도모하는것 이외에 특별한 생각이나 임무가 없이 참여했다. 나는 강을 살린다는것에 대한 문제점에 대해서 깊게 들어가고 싶지는 않다. 그 이슈에 대한 정치적인 지형을 만드는데 큰 영향력을 갖은 자가 오즈의 마법사 같아서, 자신이 상상하는 삶의 방식, 사실은 지속가능하지 못하고, 그가 굳게 믿는다고 주장하는 것에 실제로는 반대하여, 내가 떠나온 지역에서는 형제를 남과 북으로 나누기도 하는, 그런 힘을 많은 사람들에게 강요하기 때문이다. 하지만 아무것도 새로울것이 없다. 하지만 내가 말하고자 하는것은 강은 문명의 기초이고, 강이 없으면 도시에 기반한 세계는 존재하지 않을것이다. 확실한것은 정보화 시대와 네트워크 자본주의는 지도를 새로 그리고 있으며 원자연에 대한 전쟁은 어느때보다도 촉박하다. 사람들은 민주주의라는 종교를 갈망하며 아이패드나 인공적인 수평성에 만족할것인가? 분산된 권력에 저항하는 전쟁에서는 어떠한 방식의 조직이 효율적일까?

In the 19th century  Mark Twain said “whisky is for drinking, and water is for fighting”, when he referred to water issues in the Rio Colorado, in the state of Colorado in Occupied Mexico. And almost 2 centuries later, not much has changed: except Colorado was made thru violence into a state of the USA, and the mexican population that still inhabits there (and in the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Nuevo Mexico, Texas) is targeted as part of the war for territory (that thing which postmodern thought doesn’t consider important anymore), and water is still for fighting: corporations own the right to it, and citizens aren’t allowed to store it. Downstream the water goes into the Gulf of California (in Mexico), where yuman indians have been fishing for more than 3,000 years, except now the water doesn’t reach into the sea, as it’s artificially diverted for purposes that are deemed more important: mainly the generation of electricity that is distributed to Arizona and California, the agroindustry, and homes in the US. And so many of the yuman tribes aren’t allowed to fish anymore, as groups like the WWF think they are exterminating species in risk of extinction, much like these fishermen, who have been pushed by their centuries long enemies into desertic corners of the peninsula and Arizona, where nature has taken care of them, so that the occupying forces can take over the scarce precious resources, and watch TV and google words into the night. Its the wild west, that continues since at least 2 centuries ago: the wild west which the forces of occupation want to tame and domesticate.

19세기에 마크 트웨인은 점령된 멕시코령의 리오 콜로라도Rio Colorado 에 대해서 말하며 “위스키는 마시기 위함이고 물은 싸우기 위함이다” 라고 말했다. 2세기가 지났는데 많은것이 변하지는 않았다, 물론 콜로라도는 폭력적인 방법을 통해서 미합중국의 영토로 흡수되었고 그 지역에 아직까지 살고있는 멕시코인들은 영토, 포스트 모더니즘이 더이상 중요하다고 생각하지 않는 영토 말이다,의 일부분으로 저격 대상이 되었다.물론 그것은 캘리포니아, 아리조나, 네바다, 뉴멕시코, 그리고 텍사스에서도 마찬가지 이다. 그리고 물을 위해서는 아직도 싸우고 있다. 대기업들은 그것의 소유권을 갖고 있으며 시민들은 그것을 저장하지 못하게 제한되어있다. 캘리포니아 걸프의 하류로 흘르는 강은 유만Yuman 인디언들이 3000년 이상 낙시하던 곳이지만 더이상은 물이 흐르지 않는다. 그 이유는 주로 아리조나와 캘리포니아에서 전기를 생산하기 위해서 다른곳으로 흘러가고, 식자제를 생산하기 위해서, 그리고 미국의 가정으로 흘러간다. 월드 와일드라이프 펀드World Wildlife Fund 같은 단체들은 그들이 멸종 위기의 종자들을 사라지게 하고 있다고 해서 많은 유만 부족들은 더이상 낚시를 할수 없지만, 몇 세기에 걸친 전쟁과 압박을 통해 사막의 가장자리로 쫒겨난 그 낚시꾼들의 선대처럼 밀려가고 있다, 하지만 자연은 그들을 돌보았고, 그곳을 점령하는 힘들은 남아있는 소중한 자원을 착취하고 집에 가서 티브이를 보며 구글에 단어나 치면서 시간을 보낸다. 이것이 와일드 웨스트이다, 2세기가 넘게 지속되고 있는 서부의 끝자락에서는 점령자들이 아직도 자연과 그곳의 사람들의 길들이고 재배하려고 한다.

Collective intelligence agent 001 and 002 of the Collective Intelligence Agency grew up in the same region of Aridoamerica, that region which is northward of the imperial Mesoamerica where great civilizations thrived. Collective intelligence agent 001 and 002 grew in different sides of the heavy metal border wall, which the USA built (“separating” México from USA) after celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall. Agent 001 lived upstream where water melts off the glaciers and snow, and is infinite and free and becomes ice in the winter days. Agent 002 lived many kilometers west of the downstream, where the electricity produced by the river might light a few streets, and where the Samsung Tijuana Park acceses cheap labor to export electronics into the USA, and where Hainjin containers that travel across the Pacific Ocean, one day could become vessels delivering a message of solidarity linking art-activists from Mexico, South Korea and the USA, which hopefully as it bounces back from one way to the other, could end up creating a chain and a long-lasting relation, better than free trade which is only free for goods, but very expensive for people.

집단지능원 001과 002는 아리도어메리카Aridoamerica의 같은 지역에서 자라났다. 메소어메리카 제국의 위쪽의 영토에는 문명이 번창했던 곳이다. 집단지능원 001과 002는 거대한 철로 만들어진 벽의 반대편에서 자랐는데 그 벽은 베를린 장벽이 허물어진 후 미합중국이 멕시코와 자신을 가르기 위해서 만든 것이다. 에이전트 001은 산 위의 빙하와 눈이 녹아 물이되고 자유롭고 무한해서 겨울에는 어름이 되는 강의 상류에서 살았다. 에이전트 002는 그곳에서 몇키로미터 남쪽의 하류에서 살았는데 그 강이 생산하는 전기가 밤에 몇개의 길거리를 간신히 밝혔고, 삼성 티우화나 공단에서 값싼 노동력을 사용해 생산해낸 전자제품들을 미합중국으로 수출하고, 한진 컨테이너가 태평양을 건너와 물건을 옮기는 곳이다. 언젠가는 그것들이 예술가-활동가들이 만든 연대의 메세지를 전달하는데 사용되서 멕시고, 남한, 그리고 미국의, 그것들은 한곳에서 다른곳으로 옮겨 다니며, 결과적으로는 원거리의 관계를 형성된다면 그것은 현재의 유통 방법, 물건에게는 자유롭고 무료이지만 사람들에게는 아주 비싼, 그런 것 보다는 나을것이다.

It is all clear to me, as the first address agent 001 and 002 shared together was in Koreatown, in Los Angeles, a mexican town still under occupation by imperial forces, who are fulfilling the spanish prophecy who modelled California after the ficticious land of Amadis de Gaula knight novels, and so the dreamtown of Hollywood and the virtual world of Disneyland make total sense, even if they are built over the agricultural economy that sustains the state since the days of Diego de la Vega, our beloved mask fiend known as El Zorro.

Nothing to understand. Its time to start exchanging files. Files that make sense to share. Goods that can help us develop our societies in a meaningful way.

나에게는 에이전트 001과 002가 처음으로 사용한 주소가 로스엔젤레스의 코리아타운이라는 것이, 로스엔젤레스가 제국의 팽창에 의해 아직 점령되어있는 곳으로 스패인 예언자가 아마디스 데 구알라 백작의 소설에 바탕으로 만들어졌으며, 할리우드의 드림타운이나 디즈니랜드의 가상세계도 우연의 일치가 아니고 완벽하게 이해된다. 그것이 불과 디에고 데 라 베가Diego de la Vega, 우리의 복면 친구, 엘 조로El Zorro의 시절부터 미합중국이 의존해오던 영농 산업과 경제에 기반한 것이라도 말이다,

이해 해야하는 것은 없다. 이제 파일을 공유해야할 시간이다. 파일은 공유할때 의미가 있다. 그것은 우리의 사회를 의미있는 방향으로 발전시킬수 있는 물질이다.
